How Often a Robot Pool Cleaner's Filter Needs Cleaning
After every cycle. That's what two maker manuals say, in nearly the same words: it is highly recommended to clean the filter basket after each cleaning cycle12.
Other makers and other models may give a different schedule, so look in yours.
What "after each cycle" means
A cycle is one run of the robot through the pool. When it finishes, you lift it out and clean the filter before it goes back in. The routine is shown below.
The Dolphin manuals call this "highly recommended." That's their wording, not a hard rule from this site, and they don't say what happens if you wait longer1.
Why the manuals pair it with a drying warning
Each manual also has a note on drying. Basic 11 owners are told the panels shouldn't be allowed to dry before cleaning1. Mass 12 owners get the same warning for the basket2.
Put the two lines together and the routine is straightforward: clean it soon after the cycle, rather than leaving a dirty filter to dry. The manuals give no reason for it.
Signs of a full filter
The manuals quoted here don't list signs of a full filter, and they don't mention warning lights, so this page can't tell you what to look for. Some models may have an indicator. Your manual will say.
A general source says leaves and sticks, or just a lot of debris, can easily clog a cleaner or its pump basket3. That sentence is about suction-side cleaners, which use the pool's pump. It isn't about robots.
See what the filter does for why the filter fills at all.
Where the dirt builds up
One description of electric robots says some machines have delayed timers that make the robot stay at the waterline, where more dirt accumulates, to momentarily scrub3. It says "some machines," so don't assume yours does this.
It does suggest that a pool's dirt isn't spread evenly. A robot that spends time near the waterline meets that dirt. Whether it fills the filter faster is something this site can't say. Your own cycles will show you, and the manual is where the maker sets the routine.
If you skip a cycle
The manuals say "highly recommended," and give no penalty for skipping. This site won't invent one. What you can do is read your own manual for any warning about a full or clogged filter, and ask the maker if it isn't there.
Bottom line for the routine
Switch off and unplug before you open anything1. Then empty the filter and rinse it. If your own manual says to do it at another interval, follow your manual.
